Like a Big Stick-a Buttah! -- All about the bumper I did for the Rosie O'Donnell Show on Barbra's 56th birthday (in 1998)!!

I got this birthday card called "Wants to be Barbra" that I got from my friend Kelly Abraham, who knows how much I love Barbra.  The artist who did this wonderful drawing is Jim Coughenour.  Please visit his web site.

I ATTENDED BARBRA'S FINAL PERFORMANCE in September 2000!  Before I did, though, I was interviewed on WCBS-TV about the ticket prices for Barbra's show.

My father got me hooked on Barbra.  He was a Neil Diamond, Karen Carpenter, Dionne Warwick kind of guy although he liked a lot of artists I would never listen to without ear plugs like Creedence Clearwater.  When it came to Barbra though I saw something in his tone that struck me as powerful enough to always retain.  He steadfastly held that Barbra was "by far the greatest singer in the world" disagreeing with my mother and others, for example, over Elvis' comparable talent.  On very little my father and I agreed when I was child, but Barbra always brought us together.  She's just like buttah! I'm getting all farklempt!  I'm going to get spilkies in my connectizoid!  Talk amongst yourselves.  Topic of discussion -- the Holy Roman Empire was neither Roman nor an Empire. There, I'm all better now!

This is me (left) in front of the now defunct Hello Gorgeous, the Museum/Shop in the Castro Section of San Francisco dedicated to Barbra exclusively.  I walked in the first time and said "Thank God my American Express doesn't have a limit!" Needless to say they loved me.  I didn't spent quite as much time in my visits to Hello Gorgeous as I did for the concert in New York City ($700 on tickets and another $400 in merchandise), but I continued to amass my memorabilia.

Since living in New York I have seen Barbra in concert at Madison Square Garden, her sister, Roslyn Kind, in concert at the Blue Note, after which I met Ms. Kind, their mother, who walked behind my chair at Roslyn's concert, Liza Minelli at both Barbra and Roslyn's concerts and finally Barbra's son, Jason Gould, with his lover at Century 21 department store in Manhattan in the early 90's -- I was so taken aback that I forgot a package from another store on the streisand at madison square marquee.jpg (52391 bytes)clothes rack! I guess I can die happy now?

Interesting bit of trivia:  My home in Brooklyn is apparently right around the corner from where For Pete's Sake was filmed and I went to law school across the street from the plaza where Barbra goes in disguise to get a package.  Neat stuff!

MNIB1.JPG (49994 bytes)My daughter, Alexandra likes songs like "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" and "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" -- but so far she's not a third generation fan.  I wanted to name her after Barbra Joan, but her mother wouldn't let me, even ignoring my rhetorical request to wait to have the C-section four days so they would share the same birthday (April 24) fifty years apart!  Alexandra does love to sing though!

It's no secret I'm a fan when you visit my home.  My house is a shrine.  There are hints of Barbra in every room.  My daughter could say "Barbra Streisand" before she could say Daddy or Mommy I think.  She recognized her voice and silhouette before she knew farm animals!  Alexandra knows how much Daddy loves Barbra but contrary to Daddy's wishes, Alex was not named Barbra Joan and Alexandra's birthday was four days before Barbra's -- April 20 in lieu of April 24 despite my asking that the planned C-section be delayed (just kidding folks -- somebody emailed me that I was cruel for wanting to jeopardize my ex-wife's health for this selfish reason thinking I was serious -- and I was).

I never really wanted Barbra romantically because she's a few months older than my mother, although I can't see why any man would not find her stunning. I find her to be deceivingly gorgeous at all points in her life and her talent to be superhuman. I therefore do subscribe to the belief that she is larger than life, but I respect her too much to invade her privacy. I also respect her political views and happen to agree with them almost completely. I like -- and am satisfied with -- admiring Barbra from afar with 36 expressions more than all them Barrymores put together. I just want her to do all the work she can satisfyingly do. I was lucky to have discovered her when there was already a few decades of work to enjoy. On a clear day I intend to enjoy her music and film performances with my children and grandchildren forever.

Joe Doyle and I went to see Barbra's re-release of Funny Girl in 2002 (more than 30 years after it's first release) at the Ziegfeld Theater in Manhattan.  Barbraholics unite!  Let go and let Barbra!!!  Thanks to my friends Johnny and Cliff, I have these Barbra items in my collection.  This is me showing them off in my foyer, which of course we refer to as the Barbra Shrine.  When there was a "Hello Gorgeous" museum in San Francisco's Castro District for Barbra, she had sent the owner a note of appreciation saying, "A Jewish Shrine?"  Well every good Streisand fan should have one!

  • What does it mean when people applaud? . . . Should I give 'em money?  Say thank you? Lift my dress?  The "lack" of applause -- that I can respond to.
