In 1993, at the March on Washington, DC, I began taking
photos of bearded men. I had always been attracted to bearish types, and here I was
presented with a large group of them from around the country. When I returned home,
I thought about putting my small collection of bearded men into a collage or a scrap
book. The world turned, times changed, and I never got around to doing this.
Then next year at our local AIDS walk and at our local Pride march, I began taking photos
of bearded men in earnest, with the idea of gathering all my pictures and putting them in
a photo album which I could show to friends, and which I would call the Beardbook.
Six years, five albums, and 1,300 pictures later, the collection is still growing. Ive taken bearded pictures at New York Pride, at Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence in New Orleans, LA, in all the New England states, and on the streets in my home town. When I see a bearded man, I decide if I think his picture should be in my collection, and I ask him if I can photograph him. In six years, Ive received only fifteen negative responses. At this website are some of my favourite photos from the Beardbook collection. --Ken del Po, Boston, MA 1999 Related Links: |
