Assuming My Identity 1-Sep-03 -- It pays to have friends all over the world. I have a few contacts in Australia (Oz) who knew my pictures from my site but never met me. They tell me that someone at www.gaymatchmaker.com.au is using one of my (not most flattering) photos. It is the same one as I have here to the right, but he thought he was clever by flipping the direction around. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery. Should I succumb to technophobia, a purported reason for people to stop disseminating their photos online? Hell no. I'm not closeted or in a purportedly closed relationship and I think the real motivation of people who refuse to get a picture these days is just that. You have to make a concerted effort NOT to have an electronic photo of yourself these days. Somebody, somewhere, has digital pictures of you. I heard a survey on the news that said that few people use other people's pictures as themselves for the simple reason that one cannot really show up at the door (or in a public place for the most prudent of us) and say "Sorry I am not the person I portrayed myself to be." The study said that gay people were actually less likely to use false pictures, perhaps because we meet each other more casually and more often. I think I'll let this guy make a fool out of himself. Of all people to pick in the bear/gay community he had to pick a picture of someone who is on the other side of the planet but who has a big old web page that a lot of bears are familiar with. I'm not tooting my own horn but I've probably surpassed the level of low-profile irrevocably. I do believe in karma, but I may help it along a little bit by notifying the webmaster of the site. All I can say is that he had better be a very hot man! This page was last updated 29-Dec-2007. |
