Plastics and Me

14-Oct-02 -- One day I got a call from a company in a very barren part of Brooklyn.  It seems the owner of this plastic manufacturing company had seen my resume online and thought I would be qualified to do some consulting for his firm.  I was a little suspicious because I did not understand what kind of "plastics" this company made.  I thought perhaps they were adult "toys", particularly because I had seen some adult books stores in the area where this company was located.  I also presumed that the owner had gleaned that I was gay from my web site and had no problem with that.

Before I could even discuss my rate, this man asked if I could come over to fix their network issues right away.  Then he floored me by saying "I must say, you are an attractive man" which made me believe he was trying to tell me that he was also gay and wanted perhaps a little more than computer consulting.  I really needed the work at the time, so I gave my friends the information in case they found my body in little pieces everywhere.

As it turns out, the company is quite legitimate and makes plastic bags (nothing else).  The man is a very nice person with no ulterior motive, and his company has been a client of mine for years now.  He is completely straight and to this day still has never realized that I'm gay, my rainbow pins and hats notwithstanding.  He has been married half a century, has grown children and is thriving in his 70's.  It's a family-owned business that has been around for generations.
