Metro DC Snipers 28-Dec-02 -- Regarding the infamous DC-area snipers, my recent cumulative disgust with boilerplate media has come to a head. I guess my gaydar is never off because it occurred to me as odd that a STEPSON who is nearly 18 and his step-father of dubious origin couldn't help but remind me of that gay couple who did the thrill killing in Chicago's ritzy area at the earlier part of the 20th Century (I can't remember their names off the top of my head). Of course back then their being gay was not mentioned by the media because I guess it helped to pretend like gay people simply did not exist. With these new snipers, I couldn't help be reminded of so many inequitable gay relationships that I've seen (which of course also exist on the str8 side). I can understand how this young man (which is not to forgive the borderline pedophilia of the older) may have been coerced into "rebelling" against society in a way, although there is never an excuse for victimizing people like they did. I also do find it disturbing how quickly people are rushing to prosecute every minor who commits a heinous act as an adult. While it may be appropriate here, there are laws which distinguish crimes committed by minors for a reason. We mustn't lose site of that if we are to remain a civilized society and with the plethora of problems that our criminal justice system has to begin with. |
