California, My Home State

Back to California in 2007!

Updated April 24, 2007:  Today is my lucky day, perhaps because it's Barbra Streisand's birthday.

I flew into San Francisco last night, woke up this morning and put on my beautiful new suit.  My friend Joseph and I took the bus downtown and I stopped by Kinkos to print out a fresh copy of my resume.  While we were having breakfast, I pontificated about my first in-face interview with a company that interviewed me twice over the phone.  I realized they would offer substantially less than another job I had another phone interview for just last Friday.

I got a call during our meal and was asked to show up for work at the more lucrative position Wednesday (on a contract-to-perm basis).  I was working a contract job in New York for almost two years and was being made an offer to go permanently.  I knew I was going to try to relocate so I stalled them and now it seems I have a better opportunity here.  This job in San Francisco is a tech job for a large law firm (very similar to what I've been doing) that is based here, but also has a smaller office in New York!  Hopefully that means that I will be able to fly back to NYC periodically for work.  I am going to get paid a LOT more than I was making in New York and of course I anticipate that our expenses will be lower.  Josh has been assured that his job will pay him the same that he was making in New York as well.  He asked for a transfer today.

Previous posting of April 17, 2007:  While it is sooner than anticipated, I am interviewing at some promising prospects in San Francisco the week of April 23, 2007, staying temporarily with a friend of mine who is himself a former New Yorker, in Twin Peaks.  I've been in New York City nineteen years (this time).  I lived there a few years a child (also having lived in Italy and Spain).

If I get a firm offer, I will probably start work right away, to be joined by Josh soon after when he gets a transfer.  I am expecting my daughter, Alexandra, who I have always had primary custody of, to join us by late August to start her second year of high school there.  Her mother is from that area as well and most of her relatives still live very close.

Why are we moving?

1.  My siblings, who I expected to never have children, are both doing so now, and my visits to California would have been far more frequent anyway.  I also want to be physically closer to my mother who is spending more time in California herself as a result.

2.  If we have to live in the suburbs of any city, even temporarily, to save up money and pay off bills since living in New York is not cheap, I want to be in suburbs that I'm familiar with that are close to my family, where the weather is kinder, especially if I can still have access to public transportation.  The still largely unresolved traffic problems of the 1980's was a major impetus for my leaving the area, but I've resolved to not relive the nightmare commute that I undertook back then.

I hope that all of you keep us in mind when you visit the San Francisco area.  Just as I loved to guide and host out-of-towners in New York City, I will do the same in my native California.
