From
time to time when I speak to people on the other side of the issue about queer people and
why we are so adamant about knowing who we are they sometimes open the door to their
ignorance by saying something like "God created AIDS to punish gays."
Queer History, I believe is the best defense to these attacks. My response to this
ignorance? "Why would your God wait until the 1980's to punish gays?"
No rational personal can deny that there has always been homosexuality among human
beings. Moreover, was God trying NOT to punish lesbians? Is one kind of
homosexuality better than another? That usually shuts them up.
GLPCI and GLSEN are organizations I belong to.
They are about educating the public. History is an important way (not just for queer
issues) to educate and make sure that we do not retract from the progress that has been
made. Queer progress should not be a fad, but rather an irreversible step forward,
just as the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s was.
