Governors Island, New York

This is me when I lived on Governors Island, New York from about February 1977 to June 1980.  I think my family was happiest when we lived here and when Mom worked.

You can see how much  my family got to enjoy its panoramic view from our subsidized apartment of the Statue of Liberty on one side and the glorious skyscrapers of lower Manhattan on the other side. Right in front of us was Ellis Island.

My grandfather from Italy is here visiting us including a tour with the Circle Line.  Also included is some footage from our apartment in the winter.

Most of Governors Island is landfill. There are many historical landmarks in the older section of the island. (the rounder North section).

I lived in the largest building on the island with the exception of the white tower on the North side extended out from the shore. That tower is for the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel.

Governor's Island was a very quiet, safe place in the middle of the city since everyone on there had to be military. The only way onto the island is via a five-minute ferry ride from southern Manhattan. I attended Public School 26, a New York City school, which is shown in the lower left hand corner of this picture.
This is building 877, where I used to live between February of 1977- June of 1980. My family had the apartment in the south wing (most to the right and facing the river) on the top floor (the apartment is two stories high) and at the southern end of the hall. It was a great place to trick-or-treat because we never had to leave the building.
