Movies

  • 11-Oct-04 John Waters' A Dirty Shame

  • Oct-04 Mean Girls -- While very careful not to have a single curse word or anyone seriously hurt, the somewhat typical Hollywood ending at least has some very good points and can be applied much more universally than to just high school girls. I watched this with my 12-year old daughter, who is very much into the three to four way or more way calling games that kids play these days, not to mention the online chat captures, etc. This movie could also be redone in ten years and called "Mean Homos" as scorned gay men also have a reputation for having no comparable fury, to paraphrase Shakespeare. I love this non-stop laugh movie with a brilliant cast. I usually find Tim Meadows to be a bore, but Tina Fey, who adapted the screenplay from a story, is brilliant as a supporting character. All the supporting characters have good parts, although I would have liked to see more of Anna Gasteyer and the other SNL-alum who played the "cool" pushover mom. I think both of them are underrated. The movie is very clever, and not always predictable.

  • Sep-04 Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow -- Very high action and I love Gwyneth Paltrow, who looks like her mother here. Judge Law is distractingly feminine once again, despite his sometimes exposing a hairy chest, but the real bear quotient in this film is when the leading man and woman find themselves naked in bed with the Arab comedian who co-starred in the Whoopi Goldberg show. What a woofdah. I can only imagine the bear and his bearcub scenarios that run through the minds of the gay audiences when they glean this one.

  • Aug-04 Manchurian Candidate -- It was okay.  I wouldn't see it again.

  • Jul-04 Fahrenheit 911 -- Winner of Cannes Festival Best Film 2004!  This is a very important film.  Michael Moore does it again.  His official web site is www.michaelmoore.com.

  • Cacchorro (English Title:  Bear Cub) -- [2004] I saw this with a group of friends at the Tribeca Film Festival  A very moving yet sexually progressive film.  Brought me to tears and helped bring my subculture to the mainstream.  It's also a very positive portrayal of gay parenting.

  • Queen of the Damned (by Anne Rice) - The movie was better than I thought it would be.

  • Interview with a Vampire -- I am not a fan of Brad Pitt or the other guy, but the movie was done.  The child actress was wonderful.

  • Internet Movie Database

  • Alien Resurrection -- I love that shoplifter!  She will always remind me of my sister.

  • On a Clear Day You Can See Forever -- My favorite Barbra Streisand music with incredible costumes and a look back at early 1970's New York City, which is priceless.

  • Funny Lady -- Co-starring sexy James Caan.  Some great musical numbers but a sad beginning and end.

  • The Way We Were -- Every broken heart can relate, but the real meaning of the movie was lost on the cutting room floor (ask me about this).

  • Prince of Tides - Childhood can be hell.  I dare you not to cry.

  • Nuts - New York attitude versus coping with abuse.

  • Amistad -- The Film

  • Evita - Madonna really impressed me.

  • Funny Girl (see Barbra Page for links to filmography) -- Barbra's debut. Hello gorgeous! Her first academy award she tied with Katherine Hepburn in 1968.

  • What's Up Doc -- I've got it memorized.  Updated version of Bringing Up Baby with Katherine Hepburn, someone said.  Barbra looks more beautiful and natural than ever.

  • The Owl and the Pussycat -- Barbra plays an outrageous prostitute.

  • For Pete's Sake -- Oh what a tangled web Barbra weaves!

  • Yentl -- A refreshingly Jewish-themed film that gentiles like me don't need an apology for.

  • The Mirror Has Two Faces -- And Barbra is gorgeous anyway.

  • The Main Event -- Surprisingly touching.  Great follow-up film of Ryan O'Neil and Barbra.

  • A Star is Born -- Outstanding numbers from Barbra.  Kris Kristofferson is a mess.

  • Hello Dolly -- Although 20 years too young for the part, Barbra steals the show with that voice and those numbers.  Thank God they didn't let that frog-voiced woman do it!

  • Cat on a Hot Tin Roof -- Have Newman <the tobacco company whore> and Elizabeth Taylor ever looked better.  The sexual magnetism is so intense even though the homosexual content was brushed over.

  • All Night Long -- A very mediocre film of Barbra's with atrocious-looking Gene Hackman.

  • The Fifth Element -- Bruce Willis kicks butt again.  Great special effects.  I love the vertical New York City.  More comedic moments than necessary and quite unnecessarily mushy.

  • Total Recall -- Action movies are good, even with cardboard actors, if they have good special effects and actually have a story.

  • Color Purple -- I cry every time.  Favorite lines include "I's married now!" Both inspiring and cathartic in many ways.

  • Fried Green Tomatoes -- What a surprisingly touching lesbian-themed movie.  I had no idea what I was about to watch.

  • Muriel's Wedding -- So un-Hollywood I love it.  I just want to slap those smug Ozzie Valley girls.  The ending was so pleasantly unclean.

  • Bird Cage -- I can't help but love that hairy man

  • Love You To Death

  • French Kiss -- Big Francohpile here (and Kevin Kline fan).  I saw Kevin at FAO Schwarz toy store one day.

  • When a Man Loves a Woman -- Meg Ryan is terrific as an alcoholic woman. Too bad she doesn't appreciate that hairy and bare-chested Cuban husband of hers!  <See pool scene.>

  • Forget Paris

  • Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney) -- What a great score!

  • Roger & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1997) -- Whitney and Brandy are enchanting. Great scenes with Whoopi and Bernadette Peters too.

  • Cocoon -- Inspiring.  Don't be afraid of death or old age.

  • Six Degrees of Separation - I've loved Stockard Channing ever since Grease, although she was hardly a convincing teenager.  She and Will Smith are wonderful in this show.  I understand it was a real difficult decision for him to take a gay role as his first major film.

  • Grease -- At first I thought it was a college movie.  My friend in elementary school asked me if I was going to "Greece" that evening.  I thought she meant the country.  I think the movie changed my life.  I had no idea ONJ would go through a metamorphosis the first time.  My daughter later fell in love with the movie, when she was about 4.  She watched it sometimes three times a day.  At first I cringed as they say "shit" and a few other off-color words, but it is a fun movie.

  • Too Wong Foo - predictable, even though Stockard Channing always steals the show.

  • Priscilla - Even though it affirms gay parenting, I found it to have no plot.

Animated

  • Shrek & Shrek2!  -- 2004-Jun-19 -- I don't see that many movies these days, but I was looking forward to this sequel which has a shameless satire of Hollywood itself, as opposed to just Disney with the first Shrek.  While not as poignant as the first, it is just as spectacular cinematography, even if it is all virtual.  Great "in-jokes" for all ages and you definitely must see it repeatedly to get everything.

  • South Park Bigger, Longer, Uncut -- Must see many times to catch it all.  I like the pace and intelligence of this Oscar-nominated movie.  It even has a real message, but not the one that is always apparent, as it show.
