For the second Summer in a row, Alexandra and I spent a week in Provincetown, Massachusetts, a lovely town on the edge of Cape Cod. The event is hosted by Family Pride Coalition, of which I have been on the board for several years. Alexandra and I made a lot of new friends and we saw a lot of old friends (this was our fourth conference, which is more like a family reunion).

| "Tattoo in the
Bathroom"
While several of the dads and I were at a table one evening, enjoying a meal at the Provincetown Inn with hundreds of others who were there for Gay Family Week, Alexandra was asked to take Lily to the bathroom. Alexandra came back and asked if she could have 75 cents for a temporary tattoo in a vending machine. I was about to give it when my friend Kevin said that his daughter advised him that these "tattoos" were in a vending machine in the ladies room (I hadn't realized that part). So I told my daughter that these were probably not what she believed them to be, without getting into too much detail (we were at the dinner table), but she insisted that she did not read too quickly and that it was "tattoos". I told her that if she was so sure, to take the quarters and read it carefully again before making a purchase. A few minutes later she came back to the table, slapped the quarters in front of me and ran off to play with the other kids without an explanation. I asked Lily what happened and Lily said: "They were big lady things!" Normally, that would be a great place to finish this story, but incredibly I told this to one of the lesbian moms who had been in the ladies room and -- to my shock -- she advised me that there was indeed a vending machine in the ladies' room that sells three items: (1) condoms, (2) tampons and (3) tattoos!!!! Only in Provincetown... |
