Furniture from Fire

This is the only piece of furniture that I tried to have professionally cleaned which sort of survived the fire in January at my house AFTER having survived my mother’s fire eight years prior. It still smells like fire, which is sort of triggering for me, so it’s currently in my garage, despite the “professional” attempt to clean it. I don’t know if I can find someone talented or patient enough to ever paint it again, but here is the current 2024 condition and from 2020 between the two fires. My family bought this when we lived in Spain in the mid-1970s and it’s one-of-a-kind based on my research. It has a proletariat message and comes from the Catalonia region where we lived.

Keiana and Aaron’s Wedding

I was Shea’s plus-one at his cousin Keiana’s wedding in San Francisco at City Hall. The reception later on was at an Italian restaurant called Palio. We also stopped by City Lights Bookstore, which was my first time there. We looked for cannolis in North Beach, but we ran out of time and there was tons of good food to be had anyway.

Few Items that Survived Fire

Some of these were professionally cleaned. I’m grateful to have my original law degree, although I’ll be requesting a new copy o both of my degrees from my college and law school. I’m also grateful that at least some of my yearbooks survived with the original signatures of classmates. I’m amazed at some of the ceramics my mom hand-painted and created in her own kiln. They look like new after cleaning, like the fish with big eyes and the xmas decorations. All but a few were from my mother’s own handiwork.

Half Moon Bay Visit

Shea’s aunt, cousin, cousin’s wife and cousin’s son, from Pittsburg, California (his hometown) were camping in Half Moon Bay. That happens to also be my dad’s old stomping ground from after his retirement from the Coast Guard since he had a commercial fishing boat there. We went out to see them (my first time meeting Shea’s family), which also served to escape the heat wave that was in the Bay Area. For those who aren’t familiar with the various microclimates in the area, the coast is almost always more pleasant during times like this. Surprisingly there was very little traffic for a Saturday, and we even got back in time for some pool time with friends in Vallejo, which was still well above 90 degrees when we returned around 6pm.

While in Half Moon Bay we did a lot of outdoor activities, including taking a long walk along the beach, rode the bikes with the cart for dogs hitched to one of them, which completely inspired me to get one for my electric bike. We also had some food al fresco, and played Rummy Tile, a board game inspired by Mahjong. I didn’t win either game, but at least I didn’t come in last the second time I played!

You’ll see in the videos that I come to a sudden stop at least once to make sure the dogs were okay behind me. They were carefully strapped in, but were probably unsure of what to make of the situation. Shea is filming when I did this so he almost ran into me. You can see it from two perspectives which we laughed about in the end. Fortunately no one was hurt during the making of these videos, least of all the dogs.

Donated Furniture in Rental

I’m still taking nice pieces from friends who need to move forward on. I love this armoire a friend in San Francisco had to give from a friend of his who died. The clawfoot desk/dresser that was in this space is now put into the living room, in a space that I really like. There are more pieces to be photographed as I stage the house for the furniture I’m taking back home to my house under renovation.
