June 2022 Glen Cove Community Association Meeting

As the current President of the GCCA, I had the honor of introducing guests at our bi-annual community meeting. Shando and I had to leave for a red-eye to Ohio that evening, but I was glad that I could squeeze the meeting in.

Our focus for this meeting was the importance of evacuation, especially in the case of a wildfire, which is unfortunately common in this area. We are very fortunate that GCCA was instrumental in getting Fire Station 26 re-opened here in Vallejo. They were in attendance and helped to bring awareness to the AlertSolano.com website.

Foster Poopsie R.I.P.

This is hard to talk about because it ended so tragically. Shando and I fostered this gorgeous puppy (not the guest dog named Cookie, who is having a moment), for about a week.

When we got Poopsie, I thought it was really cute because that’s the pet name that my grandfather had for my grandmother, although if we would have kept him, he would have been called Iggy.

We almost immediately found a home nearby where we knew he would be treated well, but unfortunately, while they were out walking Poopsie, a vicious dog in the neighborhood, who was being dog-sat, got off leash and attacked and killed Poopsie (who had been renamed). It was traumatic for our neighborhood and many of us rushed to the scene with the screams, which also threw Poopsie’s new mom to the ground and injured her. I could not believe my eyes and openly sobbed when our vet, who had rushed over, could not resuscitate him. Life is so short and can be so unfair. This is probably the only footage we have of him, which I was glad to find.

June is Pride Month

While we will be in Ohio for San Francisco Gay Pride, fortunately there are plenty of pride events happening in Solano County.

Shando and I attended the Vallejo City Council declaration of June as Pride Month with some of our fellow members of the community.

We also attended the Pride Picnic for the second year in a row on Mare Island put on by Solano Pride and Vallejo Gay Network.

Loop Around Lake Tahoe

We stopped by Camp Richardson on the southern side of Lake Tahoe where I used to camp as a kid in the 1970s and 1980s. My grandfather worked there from the late 1960’s to the Eighties.

Downtown Truckee:

Nevada City Trip

Shando found a rental in Nevada City so we decided to explore this corner of northern California that we weren’t that familiar with for a long weekend in celebration of his 50th birthday. It turned out to be a lot more interesting than we could have imagined with a very gay-friendly atmosphere. The entire downtown area was swarmed with rainbow flags and great little shops that we enjoyed patronizing. Shando took some great portraits of flowers and the park and we took some nice ones of ourselves if I do say so myself. I’m using some of the ones Shando took of me for my profile pictures.

Beginning of Small Bathroom Renovation

I love our small, common area bathroom. The only complaint I have is that it is a place in the house where having a window is not an option. Our neighbors and friends inspired us to swap our bathtub for a double shower and glass doors, which at the very least makes the bathroom appear larger. While I’ll miss my Eiffel Tower-themed shower curtain (the bathroom has a Francophile motif), it’s good to have the depth that was lacking before.

It turns out the enclosure also comes in handy for separating dogs when we’re feeding them too!

We even considered making our primary bathroom walk-in shower much bigger by getting rid of the adjacent tub, but then someone reminded me that the resale value of the house would be affected. While I can’t fathom moving at this point, it also occurred to me that when I have grandchildren visit, they’ll need an actual bathtub to bath in, so we are leaving well enough alone. The bathtub in the primary bath is actually amazing and has huge windows, so it’s worth the sacrifice to have the primary single walk-in shower remain the size it is.

We used a company that does these bathtub-to-shower replacements with kits that are pretty universal, but it turned out that we had a protruding pipe that needed us to work around it. Fortunately, our handyman was able to come up with a solution that worked. He bent the pipe from the dryer in the adjoining laundry room a bit inward which barely changed the volume of the exhaust and then they were able to put the shower piece in as planned.

As it turns out, we often prefer to shower in the much larger shower in the small bathroom now. It has more modern fixtures, which make it convenient as well.

This stage of the renovation is before the vanity is replaced.

VGN Potluck at Shelee and Kathi’s House

Our neighbors Shelee and Kathi have an awesome house with great views from unincorporated Vallejo. They hosted the potluck on May 14. I went back for John Fox’s re-election campaign kickoff a few weeks later on June 4 and remembered to take pictures of their fabulous back garden as well.

Hello from Vallejo, California!
