Seal Footage Captured While Whaleboat Rowing

Prolonged seal sighting during SRC whaleboat rowing FINALLY captured on video this morning! Every other time I’ve seen these seals, we were actively rowing, or I couldn’t get my phone camera ready in time. The only previous sighting which was close-up that I had was when I got near one in my kayak in this same area (the Carquinez Strait). It took YEARS to get this footage, but it’s always a great joy to be able to see nature like this, especially since they know they have nothing to fear from us.

Rough Saturday Row

Unusually heavy wind and current that we “survived” after our Saturday morning row. The fog rolled in after we started rowing, which didn’t help, and it was one of the coldest rows in memory. However, seeing the current like this right outside the entrance is precisely why we didn’t go out with the new rowers during the subsequent Skills Row we had.

Xmas Eve Row 2025

Here’s the earlier row today on Xmas Eve!  What a nice break we got between atmospheric rivers with a tiny poke of sun and some blue sky in the distance.  The water was calm with almost no wind at this point, and the temperature was actually good enough for shorts. I adorned my crochet hat from the White Elephant the other day, but it wasn’t even cold enough for it. Still, I wanted to show off how I accidentally matched my pants in that one picture. As you can see, the red-tagged boat is still there, almost two months in.

20251207 Double Sunday Row

Greatly magnified, one can see in the lower left that there was a sea lion on the rocks in Glen Cove today when we were rowing. This is above and beyond the dozen or so times a sea lion popped up and was within a few hundred yards of us during the first row today.

We mistakenly thought that these would be the last rows of the year, but we are hopefully rowing next week, weather permitting.

I’m barely in this video. In the foreground, you’ll see a fuzzy hat, which is my head as I prepare the whaleboat for going out.

The first row on Sunday morning was not dangerously foggy. We’ve had to cancel only a few times due to extreme fog. More often, we cancel because of higher-than-safe winds. Today was also windy and cold, but slightly warmer than yesterday. However, it is still worth getting up at 5:30am on a weekend for the privilege of doing this all year round!

Scott was our coxswain in training today and was taking his test for certification! It’s exciting to know we’ll have another coxswain available to take us out regularly, and I know he did well!

Rowing Cancelled

Even though we row all year round, sometimes the conditions are too dangerous due to high winds or dense fog. That’s the marina down the hill, so you can see the visibility was nil this morning, but as usual it eventually burns off by late morning.
