Saved by a Sweaty Church Whore

One of the ways I (hopefully) keep my sanity with the politics and violence in the news, especially this week, is with the morning radio show I listen to 5 days a week, called the Stephanie Miller Show. I can’t believe there aren’t more Steph-heads, but six million isn’t anything to complain about! I’ve been listening for way over a decade. One of my favorite people who calls in is Lacrisha, “the sweaty church whore” from Milwaukee, because her well-planned quips go right up to the line without getting any FCC license violations for terrestrial radio. Lacrisha is pictured here with her official whore T-shirt. This morning was somber, as we got more details about what happened in Minneapolis, but Lacrisha saved the day. She was definitely pissed at the situation, as any sane person would be, but then she asked WHERE are all the moral Republicans? “Quiet as a church mouse pissing on cotton,” she said. Think about that!

Smoking in Heated Rivalry

All the rage over this new gay romance series, Heated Rivalry. It takes place in modern-day Canada, where smoking rates are incredibly low, and it’s about athletes, but they are GAY, so guess what? In the first SECONDS of the series, the first guy you see is smoking a cigarette like his life depends on it. And just in case you think this is “crazy Joe” making shit up, here’s what a cursory search shows about this idiocy that went into this directorial decision:

“In Heated Rivalry smoking is a key motif representing Ilya’s emotional walls, stress, and toxic coping mechanism regarding his complex relationship with Shane Hollander. Ilya often smokes when stressed by his father’s illness or Shane’s actions. Cigarette smoke symbolizes Ilya’s emotional barriers. Smoking is linked to Ilya’s feelings of insecurity regarding Shane. He has tried to quit because of Shane’s preferences, but returns to it, particularly when he feels neglected or that Shane has moved on.” STOP NORMALIZING THIS.

Cat Declawing Ends in California

I’m quoted in this article about the invasive and cruel procedure of declawing, which I’m so glad is almost completely curtailed now in California, as it should be. Unlike spaying/neutering and the removal of dew claws, there is no life extension or injury avoidance with declawing. It is an amputation and can endanger cats if they get out and need to defend themselves, and can also limit their climbing ability. There are several ways to humanely discourage cats from scratching furniture, which is the primary reason why some people have resorted to surgically amputating feline paws.

Kid Donations to Humane Society of the North Bay

Two different schools contacted us and said they had donations from the kids and wanted to bring them to us.

The first one was from Dan Mini Elementary School in Vallejo. The art instructor had them do these depictions of dogs and cats available for adoption on our site in the style of artist Dean Russo.

The second was a big pile of donations that Hidden Valley School in Martinez collected. A teacher, some parent guardians, and kids brought them. We had donuts and hot chocolate, which was provided by one of the kids’ grandmothers who volunteers with us. We showed them the Catio and several dogs, including in the play yard.

Medical Foster Zayla fka Boobie

On a fuzzy bed is another picture of Zayla (fka Boobie) when she was hospitalized that I never saw until today. The medical image shows her bladder with three crystallized stones that have to be surgically removed. It must be so painful that she has to urinate past these, and they will never deprecate and pass by themselves, so surgery is required. HSNB has already invested over $5,000 in her, but at least she’s alive and well, and the meds are working. She’s had no seizures since she was treated and started meds that I administer three times a day. She’s so much cleaner and mobile now that she’s been sheared, too. The other two pictures are of her more recently acting pretty much like a normal, sweet dog.

Medical Foster Edna

Thank goodness this heavy breathing is gone, but this is what Edna sounded like right after her surgery. I picked her up from the vet without even knowing what she looked like, but knowing she had many foxtails in her mouth and ear and required stitches to sew her mouth back together.

Au Revoir Chaz

Tomorrow we say au revoir to a special dog that came to us through my nosiness and diligence. Chaz was a big mess when he came to us, but he’s turned out to be quite the amazing little Pompom. He’s healthy and so much better dermatologically now that he’s had some TLC from us. I think he’ll be the star of the show when he gets to Muttville. He’s become somewhat velcro with me, which means that I know he can bond with someone else well, even though he lived his entire life with a woman who died recently. He’s so full of personality. What’s most special to me is that when he whines and gets anxious, he sounds exactly like the dog I had for 15 years, who was named Montague, or Monte for short.
