Here we go again. EBAR features a lesbian artist and just had to normalize smoking and tobacco usage/addiction, which affects the LGBTQ population at much higher rates due to our community being targeted by commercial tobacco poison pushers. For shame EBAR! It’s bad enough EBAR takes tobacco advertising that sometimes attempts to make it look like it’s an objective article. Last year I penned a response to them doing that, but the targeting of our community is still happening, and people need to speak up. Why the FUCK did this woman need to have a cigar in her hand? Does that imply “success”?!? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!

Five Years in Vallejo
Today marks five years since I moved to Vallejo and closed on my home! While most of the last two years have been a nightmare, as I have NOT been able to live in my home that was severely damaged by fire. Supposedly I’ll be back before the holidays, but that’s still many months past the intended move. It’s still ridiculously too long by all accounts, but despite that major setback and the horrible loss of life that day, I am so glad I’m here in this town that has been so good to me with a community that really had my back when I didn’t realize I needed them while I was in a haze after the tragedy in January 2024. The good news is that I have the rest of my life to not live in temporary housing that is suboptimal for my lifestyle. I need my garden back, my hot tub back, my three backyard sliders back, my carpet-less floors back, my one story life back, my non-popcorn ceiling back, my spacious kitchen back, my better flow home back, my walk-in shower back, my three car garage back, my corner home, my flooding of light in all parts of the house and places to sit and nap in the backyard at all times of the day in or out of the sun, my back deck to listen to occasional rain fall while outside with my coffee, my smart home music system emanating from every corner when desired. I’m struggling with these last few weeks in this rental, but it feels like an ever-moving target because I’m a pawn between the insurance/claim adjusters with their agenda and whatever is happening with the contractor, which includes tariffs and supply chain issues that this most corrupt of presidential administrations has contributed to. On top of that, I’ve had to spend a lot of money out of pocket just to move things along, since I’m trying to do things the right way, without going nuts on the improvements. Due to poor American leadership, due to the idiocy of the majority of the American electorate, I’ve had to pay higher amounts than otherwise because of stagflation. I always remind people that all politics are local. This is an example. When I get a move-in date, I’ll scream it from the mountaintops. I’m so embarrassed by having to guess at a move-in date when people tell me, always adding the caveat now that “so I’m told.” The picture below is shortly after I moved in five years ago, with some Halloween decorations up (during Covid, so I didn’t expect any kids).
RIP Robert Redford
Robert Redford, the director, actor, and activist, died in his sleep last night at age 89.
I shed a few tears for him this morning. I admired him in so many ways, but of course, as one of Streisand’s co-stars, he will always be associated with her in the “corners of my mind. “
While historically I only played piano by ear, because of Redford, I forced myself to learn treble clef. Playing the trombone in middle and high school, I only read bass clef fluidly. However, my dad really loved “The Sting” and the theme song, so I meticulously learned every chord to “The Entertainer,” and I still play it to this day when I practice piano.
Anyone who knows me knows I’m an uber-fan of Streisand. There are many layers to “The Way We Were” movie that most people are unaware of, even if they have seen the outtakes that Streisand released years later. They completely change the film from a romantic-political movie to a political movie with romance.
I’m going to have to arrange a movie night for it, and perhaps several of my favorite movies of hers, so that I can also teach some of the younger gays and other interested people about well-made films, another era of time, and of course the magic of Streisand on screen, as if her preternatural voice wasn’t enough to make one love her.
I minored in film and think I would have made a good director. While I was in law school, I noted that quite a number of famous directors had law degrees. Indeed, my alma mater, Brooklyn Law School, is known for its concentration of entertainment lawyers. So not only did my dad love Redford’s movies, he was a fervent Streisand appreciator. When I was 14 her presence hit me like a ton of bricks. Clicking through channels, I saw her sing “My Man.” After that, I followed suit to a further extent in my gay own way. I now have a long history of mixing with the great community of Streisand fans.
September 2025 Dogs
While I work from home, I’ve got my canine entourage. Foster Dolly and foster Marshall playing at the top of the stairs outside the temporary office I have in the rental.
Shea took this picture of me with the pack of FIVE (look carefully) a few days ago. It’s sort of an optical illusion. The three fosters are all there with Bonnie and Snoopy.
Three fosters are Millie (a small white Maltese-Poodle mix), Marshall (a cream-colored Chihuahua), and Dolly (a black Chihuahua with a white chest). The two guest dogs are Gracie and Lucy, whom I dog-sat again. Of course, our dogs are Bonnie and Snoopy.
Visiting Wellfleet:
Tobacco Activism with CoCoCo Health
I was invited to attend an in-person Contra Costa County Health meeting, which was only a short distance over the bridge from my home. I spoke about the End Game Summit I attended in Chicago recently. We also celebrated the recent Tobacco Retail License passing in Brentwood, which I spoke to City Council about remotely the day I flew back from Chicago. One of the attendees thanked me specifically for mentioning right after a paid lawyer for the tobacco retailers spoke that I was there as a lawyer who was NOT being paid. With LGBTQ Minus Tobacco, we have a coalition also making strides in Pleasant Hill, where I worked for six years.

Covering the HVAC, which was getting leaves and fruit dropping from the neighbor’s tree. I want the tree hangover to be trimmed because every year this causes a lot of work for me, although at least I was able to put it in compost and ate a few of the fruits.
HVAC was put in and has power, but the vents are not in the most ideal places. I wanted to hang a specific tapestry in this area, but now I will not be able to because of the placement of this vent that was not there before.
Painting of the rooms has been done. We are pleased with the final green and gray colors. The purple of the big room is very consistent with how I bought the house, and I love it.
I’m very concerned about rodents getting into the crawl space, as that’s what caused the fire. The wires must be covered with metal to be impenetrable.
After moving in these trees were dramatically pruned so that the window overlooking the next door neighbor and my house was fully exposed. Now that they are finally growing back, I hope they are never pruned again, although I will be adding some privacy to a few areas.
