Still February and Not Moved In Yet

One can imagine my frustration when I was planning to be back home by the first of February. As with so many projects, things have slipped. The contractor is still waiting for some supplies to be delivered. As of last night, Shea and I were able to see that the hot tub and gazebo are in their “final” location and fully wired. I am pleased with the location, but I know the final electrical inspection is pending.

It looks like we’ll have a fabulous kitchen countertop at no extra cost. We kept going back and forth on different veining with the quartz. Some of those were much more expensive brands that would have forced me to pay out of pocket again. I was most concerned about the countertop not being speckled as it was before. I loved my smooth quartz countertops before the fire, which I had since I bought the house in 2020. I was advised that the kitchen had been remodeled right before I bought. However, the speckling would always make me question if I was actually done cleaning, as every speck looked like a crumb to me. Shea agrees that the veining here, with both some greens and golds, will go well with the cabinets, samplings of which are set next to the countertop in these photos below. The contractor tells me that these pictures don’t even do it justice, so it’s a win-win.

The front door is pretty much done, although I’ll be adding a smart doorbell. To my surprise, they painted the door itself the same “koi pond green” as the rest of the house, which looks great, even though I’m probably going to accent it with a maroon storm door. That storm door will be mostly glass when the screen is not pulled down halfway, so the green will still be visible, and there’ll be lots of natural light, which is so important to me after having lived in some NYC apartments in my life that lacked natural light. We are now able to see progress inside the house, including closet doors in the foyer closet. The contractor was also able to make a last-minute update to the kitchen peninsula that I requested.

Bob Moore Memorial Playyard at HSNB

We are happy to dedicate the dog play yard in front of the parking lot at Humane Society of the North Bay in memory of the long-time donor Bob Moore. One of his fellow FBI buddies came to the dedication from Benicia. More information will be coming about the annual Bob Moore Golf Tournament, which raises funds for HSNB. One of Bob Moore’s colleagues from the FBI named James Stern is also on HSNB’s Advisory Board and is an author of children’s books based on his doxies.

Diamond Bar Center

For work I traveled to Southern California for a leadership conference.

Met some great people from the conference here in Diamond Bar. We were adorned with capes to get us in the mood to be superheroes. I also got to meet my amazing co-worker Sophia in person, who runs the smoking cessation program for City of Hope.

Oakland Airport Transfer

Living in Vallejo, it’s still very convenient to get to BART, the closest station of which is only about 15 minutes away. Then, by extension, getting to Oakland and SFO airports, especially with the Oakland shuttle connection, is a breeze now that it doesn’t require a bus.

Winged Migration 2026

Shea and I visited the Winged Migration Expo yesterday on Mare Island. There were lots of things to see and do, including live bats and a disabled woodpecker who is in human captivity because she cannot be released with much chance of survival. It was nice to run into several activists that I’ve met over the years I’ve been here in Vallejo. There are so many good people trying to improve the world, while so much chaos is unfolding in other parts of the country that need to be addressed. What a dark time it is. I needed to be around people who are looking forward to a normal world where we will try to make life better for each other, animals, and our environment.

I went up to the booth and said that I had ordered tickets a while back and started looking for my name on a list, but then they told me that it was free, so I must have gotten it confused with another reservation I made. 🙂

Rowing with at least Two Seals

BEST SEAL FOOTAGE EVER! This is probably a mating couple, but we couldn’t determine if there are more than two. I believe there may have only been two, based on the magnified footage. In any event, it’s glorious to get two video clips of the seals just this past month, when I’ve been rowing for over four years, and they’ve never been swimming near us while we were resting before. It was always while we were in the middle of rallying that they would be seen in the past. The last footage I took a few weeks ago was only one seal, so this was really wonderful to capture more than one and have them even closer to the marina than we were at the time.

The water was like a lake today, so much less choppy than yesterday. We ventured over close to the C&H Sugar Factory.

This was also the first time Shea has been in the Vallejo Times-Herald, although I’m not sure this picture from online made it into the actual front page article.

January 2026 Dogs

The never-ending squirrel hunts!
Dogsitting for Lucy and Gracie again!

It’s nice to see these sometimes rivaling foster dogs play with each other when they get the zoomies in the morning. They have sibling rivalries, which are pretty much harmless, but those pre-breakfast behaviors are always benign. I so enjoy watching them all move around like this.
