Mass Shooting at 345 Park Avenue

Sometimes I think I’m the luckiest man in the world when it comes to catastrophes I avoided, and sometimes things like the fire that happened to me that killed five of my dogs, nine days after a ten-year breakup, really put me in my place. I have told many people that I was interviewed for a job on the 76th floor of the South Tower in 2001, FIVE weeks before 9/11. I have the photo ID from entering the building and blogged about the whole thing. I’m so grateful I did NOT get that job.

I also survived a bomb threat at one of the major law firms in downtown San Francisco on the 29th floor around 2009, as a litigant came in with a flashing belt yards away from my office.

So it gave me a bit of a chill when I heard the address of this recent midtown Manhattan mass shooting that happened. 345 Park Avenue was my in-person office for years, and it was literally my first job ever in Manhattan when I moved there in the Summer of 1988 (then aged 20). For 19 years, I continued to work in and eventually moved to Manhattan. I know I’m far removed from the situation now, but it still gives me a bit of a chill. The corner of that SAME building is also known for being where Marilyn Monroe did her white dress twirl over the subway grades. Small world, eh?

Brooklyn Visits

NYC Trip

The main impetus for traveling to NYC (which I was due for a trip to see my friends and daughter anyway) was the loss of my sweet friend Michael Demarsico as I mentioned in this blog earlier in the year.  His husband had this celebration of life, so I don’t want to say that it was sad to go to his memorial, but it certainly was exactly as he would have wanted, down the last song that played and the snacks and venue that he chose.  What a guy!

My daughter’s birthday happened to be around the same time, so of course I extended my trip and got to see many of the people I love and miss, as well as show Shando my old stomping grounds.  I have a number of postings, but here are some of the random shots from the visit, including the trip to the High Line Park with my friend Carol.

Staten Island Ferry

The fish were from a tank that we were forced to look at while we waited for a return ferry to Manhattan.  I shouldn’t complain since it’s a free way to get pretty close to the Statue of Liberty, but the tourists are definitely lied to when they are told to walk a certain way toward a return ferry and they make sure it leaves before anyone else can get on, having them spend twenty minutes perusing the shops on the Staten Island side.

Washington Heights

We stayed with good friends in Washington Heights.  Included in these pictures are Fort Tryon Park and some of the food from the area.  I missed strawberry butter so much!  Why can’t they sell this stuff in stores or at least have it in the West Coast restaurants?  Also included in the pictures is the George Washington Bridge (the “GWB”) from our friend’s panoramic living room window.
