Epic Row Across The Bay

We did some switch-offs, but Solano Rowing Club and a few other rowing teams rowed over ten miles from the Oakland Marinas between Alameda near Coast Guard Island in Oakland to the Hyde Street Pier near Ghirardelli Square. We were on the water for nearly three hours with some choppy water and wind. It was a lot of fun. When we arrived, most of us walked all the way to the Ferry Terminal, more than two miles away, so we were understandably beat by the time we got on the Ferry to get back to Vallejo. It was an epic row and lots of fun. I love the views and perspectives a lot of people never get to see. The row was over ten miles.

This route had not been done by SRC in ten years (May 2016).

Ready to launch from Oakland.

I took a bunch of pictures like a tourist during that long walk on a beautiful day.

I wasn’t able to generate a map of the entire route, but this interactive video, taken by one of my fellow rowers who has an app for that, shows the path we actually took with GPS.

Golden Girls Live in San Francisco

A bunch of Vallejoans took a hired bus to go to dinner in the Fisherman’s Wharf area and then attend the Golden Girls Live show en masse. It was a wonderful and well-planned experience that Shea and I got to do with many of our friends from the Vallejo Gay Network and allies. Thanks a million to Manny and Wendell for arranging it!

The weather was actually warmer than expected since it was a little blistery in Vallejo. Usually it’s the opposite!

It was altogether a lovely evening. However, it was a nail-biter whether we’d make it through downtown traffic to the Curran Theater on time; we disembarked at 7:31 pm for the 7:30 pm show. Fortunately, I heard the theater staff mention on the walkie-talkie to hold on for a few minutes. The lobby was still crowded with attendees, so we didn’t miss anything.

Vallejo contingent before performance and during intermission.
Enjoying the holiday-decorated views at Pier 39 in San Francisco.

San Francisco Pride 2025

We made it to San Francisco Pride yesterday. This year we were smarter. We took BART most of the way to shorten the trip and make it as comfortable as possible with as few modes of transportation as we could take. I love the rainbow “Dog Dad” baseball cap I bought there. I can imagine places where I will wear it to start a conversation.

Unfortunately not everyone got the memo that street fairs are smokefree, so we didn’t stay long in front of city hall. I wasn’t in the mood to be confrontational during such a festive event, but I did take note of how entitled these people are to take away the fresh air of other people. While the enemy is the industry, some people still lack common courtesy.

It was wonderful to run into our sweet friend Neeraj, who we can always count on being anywhere there is two-stepping! Since it had been a year since Shea and I last two-stepped ourselves, I knew I would be useless on the floor this time. We should practice more.

Happy 44th Shea

Shea made wonderful omelets to start the day. We ended up having Thai food for dinner in downtown Vallejo, and then made our way to San Francisco. We stopped by Greg and Steve’s pied-à-terre in the Castro, then walked over to the Pilsner for a drink, where we met a guy who was also celebrating his birthday. He even bought us a round and had some cake to share with us! Afterward, Shea and I went to Bearracuda, which I had not been to in many years. This is in addition to my other posting here where Greg, Steve, Shea, and I took pictures under the rainbow laser lights.
